Meritorious Unit Commendation

Established by the Secretary of the Navy on December 18, 1944 and awarded   by the Secretary with the approval of the President, this Unit commendation is conferred on any ship, aircraft, detachment, or other unit of the U.S. Navy or  Marine Corps which, subsequent to December 6, 1941, distinguished itself by outstanding heroism in action against the enemy, but not sufficient to warrant award of the Presidential Unit Citation. It is also awarded for extremely meritorious service not involving combat but in support of military operations which were outstanding when compared to other units performing similar service.

The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the MERITORIOUS UNIT COMMENDATION to

Charleston Naval Shipyard

for services set forth in the following

CITATION:

         For meritorious service from 25 June 1993 to 1 April 1996.  The personnel of Charleston Naval Shipyard executed their duties in an exemplary manner and distinguished themselves during a period of constant challenge and rapid changes brought on by mandated base closure.  Remaining firmly committed to fulfilling the needs of their customers in a professional manner, the Shipyard accomplished several major ship availabilities while carrying out the closure process in an exemplary manner.  Services provided to employees have become models for other closing activities.  The superior record of Charleston Naval Shipyard attests to the outstanding team spirit and ability of its entire staff.  By their unrelenting determination, perseverance, and steadfast devotion to duty, the officers, enlisted personnel, and civilian employees of Charleston Naval Shipyard reflected credit upon themselves and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
